On Thursday, June 24th, DFCU dropped off some goodies to the heroes of the Downey Kaiser NICU to show our appreciation for all the hard work they do every day. We had a great morning delivering some breakfast treats and Starbucks coffee. Not all superheroes wear capes, they wear scrubs! Thank you for everything you do to keep our community healthy!
On Saturday, June 19th, DFCU was happy to be back volunteering at the Keep Downey Beautiful clean-up event! It has been over a year since the last clean-up, and it was a great feeling to be back out in the community. Our volunteers helped clean along Lakewood Blvd from Margaret to Cecilia and the south end of Firestone. We had a great morning with our neighbors and community members keeping our city free of litter!
On June 10th, Rotary Club of Downey installed a Little Free Library for our community to enjoy. Little Free Libraries are small libraries that operate under a “take a book, leave a book” philosophy. DFCU was happy to donate Berenstain Bears books to the library. Here at DFCU, we value promoting literacy in the community - we even have our own Little Free Library located in front of our DFCU branch! You can find the Little Free Library outside of Kirkwood Christian Schools located at 11115 Pangborn Ave, Downey, CA 9024, which can be accessed 24/7. Keep an eye out for your favorite Bear family at the Little Free Library!
On Friday, June 4th, 2021, DFCU celebrated National Donut Day with our local heroes, the Downey Firefighters! We had a great morning with the brave firefighters of Downey. We visited Stations 1, 2, 3 and 4 to deliver a sweet treat to show our thanks and appreciation for all they do to keep us safe. Since 2014 we have partnered with U.S. hunger (previously known as Feeding Children Everywhere) to address food insecurity in the communities we serve. Through our annual efforts, we have been able to package over 300,000 meals for families in the community. This year we are excited to announce that DFCU will be hosting a Virtual Food Packing Drive from March 22nd - April 22nd! There are two ways to get involved:
As schools begin to resume in person instruction, we know students may be in need of face masks. DFCU is providing schools and teachers in our field of membership with Berenstain Bears face masks.
This year DFCU introduced the Distance Learning Support Grant to assist our teachers and students in their transition to remote instruction. We received over 160 applications from over 30 different schools in the communities we serve. Most of the need was for technology and providing students with learning materials to utilize in their homes. In total, we funded 50 grant requests and gifted over $19,000!
In the last couple of months of 2020, DFCU partnered with local organizations and schools to provide a little extra holiday cheer. From helping feed and clothe the homeless, to bringing more diverse book representation in schools, to providing holiday meals to low-income families - we were filled with joy to be able to bring smiles to our communities when they needed it most with DFCU's Season of Giving!
At DFCU, we are dedicated t0 serving and empowering the communities we serve through financial literacy. We know first-hand that understanding personal finance will save you lots of money in the long run, so we frequently host financial education workshops for youth and adults. Since 2018, we've reached over 1500 community members through our financial literacy workshops and presentations. To continue to spread financial literacy during this period of social distancing, we've moved many of our workshops to a virtual format and we launched a Financial Literacy webpage that contains financial education materials on topics such as saving, credit building, and compound interest! You can access those materials here.
